Mexico to start roadworks worth US$1.7bn in 2025

Mexico will invest 35bn pesos (US$1.68bn) in 2025 to begin construction of 263km of bridges and roads along priority axes.

“This year we are announcing the first works, based on connectivity and attention to the most vulnerable areas,” President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Thursday, highlighting that in this first year of her administration, more emphasis will be placed on projects in Guerrero state, which has been hit by two hurricanes since 2023.

At Sheinbaum’s daily press conference, infrastructure, communications and transportation minister Jesús Esteva presented more details of the highway plan Sheinbaum announced during the presentation of the first draft of the five-year Plan Mexico this week.

“In total, the investment for 2025, including [infrastructure fund] Fonadin investment, is 35bn pesos. The investment throughout the administration will be close to 150bn pesos for road infrastructure, and, in this case, works we are starting are [involving] close to 263km,” said Esteva.

Priority highways will receive 11.9bn pesos this year. According to a presentation, construction will start on the following sections:

– Cuautla-Tlapa-Marquelia;

– Pachuca-Huejutla-Tamazunchale;

– Bavispe-Nuevo Casas Grandes;

– Tierra y Libertad circuit in Morelos;

– Toluca-Zihuatanejo;

– Salina Cruz-Zihuatanejo;

– Macuspana-Escárcega;

– Ciudad Valles-Tampico; and

– Transpeninsular: Tijuana-Ensenada.

In addition, the 2025 highway plan includes the construction of bridges and road interchanges in various parts of the country, with an investment of 1.78bn pesos. The highlights are:

– Baja California: Fonatur roundabout;

– Mexico City and Mexico state: Alameda Oriente bridge;

– Colima: South Arch bypass and North Arch bypass;

– Morelos: Jojuta bridge;

– Nayarit: Amado Nervo bridge;

– Sinaloa: Mexico 15-Perez Escobosa;

– Tlaxcala: Santa Ana viaduct; and

– Veracruz: port access.

Esteva said work on projects that started during the previous Andrés Manuel López Obrador administration will continue. The projects are:

– Rizo de Oro and La Concordia bridges;

– Real del Monte-Huasca section;

Nichupté vehicular bridge; and

– San Ignacio-Tayoltita section.

He also highlighted that Mexico has 43,371km of toll free roads and 10,614km of toll roads, and that 19,240km of trunk roads are the focus of government efforts.
