Mexico’s AMLO upbeat on positive tariff outcome

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) said he was confident Mexico could strike a deal with the US over the latter’s trade tariff threat.
Last week President Donald Trump said the US would slap a levy on Mexican imports on June 10 if the country did not curb the flow of migrants into the US.
A Mexican delegation is in Washington trying to reach an accord and avoid the duty being applied.
“I have information that the talks are going well, very well,” AMLO (pictured) told reporters. “I believe tomorrow’s [Wednesday] meeting is going to be important and a deal will be struck before June 10, before this tariff is imposed or enters force.”
Trump plans to introduce the 5% tariff on June 10 and raise it by 5 percentage point increments each month, reaching 25% in October.
Republican senators on Tuesday warned Trump administration officials they were solidly opposed to his plans and prepared to block his efforts, the Washington Post reported.
The development comes after Trump reiterated his tariff threat and said it would be “foolish” for senators to try to stop him.
