Mexico's Axtel inaugurates sixth data center
Mexican telco Axtel opened its second Alestra Green Data Center in the state of Querétaro, which required an initial investment of 450mn pesos (US$24.7mn). The company expects to invest an additional 800mn over the next two years.
According to Axtel's executive director of infrastructure Andrés Cordovez, these investments will allow the company to maintain a leading position in Mexico's data center segment.
The data center is 3,600m2 and designed in a modular fashion so that six data halls of 600m2 each can be build. Cordovez underscored that the modules can be personalized according to a specific industry's needs.
A particular trait is that this is the first data center in Latin America that uses a cogeneration power system, which uses the heat from electricity generation for other productive processes. According to an Axtel press release, the data center has a Certified Energy Efficiency in Data Centers Award.
Axtel merged with ICT service company Alestra at the begining of last year. At the time, Alestra had five data centers in Monterrey, Querétaro, Guadalajara, and Mexico City. Now that the new data center is operating, Axtel has six data centers covering a total of 7,200m2 in Mexico.
