Mexico's KIO Networks planning expansion, possibly to South America
Mexican datacenter company KIO Networks has a growth plan that includes expanding its business in the countries where it operates and in new territories.
"Growth is triggered by following the growth of clouds and their local areas. There are cloud announcements in the regions where we're looking to expand," Alejandro Ríos, KIO Networks' technology director, told BNamericas.
KIO Networks currently has operations in Mexico, Panama, Guatemala, the Dominican Republic and Spain, running some 40 datacenters.
Asked if the firm's expansion would include South America, where several announcements of new local clouds have been made – the most recent being the opening of an AWS local cloud in Buenos Aires, Argentina – Ríos said "it is one of the many places where that we can contribute a lot with our experience of operating datacenters.”
KIO has been working on a five-year expansion plan that includes Mexico and Latin America in general.
The company is "actively" working on evaluating projects that include capacity expansion at its modular datacenters, construction of new sites and acquisitions.
Its most recent acquisition was that of MEX6, a datacenter that has just been added to the firm's network. The site, located in the Mexico Valley in which Mexico city is located, will increase the company's infrastructure by 20MW and add an area of more than 50,000 square meters.
Due to its location, the new MEX6 datacenter will offer redundancy in the network and strengthen its presence in the financial markets in particular. KIO hosts companies involved with the Mexican stock exchange, such as BIVA.
Clients such as American Tower, C3ntro Telecom, Arelion and Azure, the Microsoft cloud, are also housed in the KIO network.
