Mexico's next govt set to expand rail network
Mexico’s president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum promised to launch a construction tender for the Nuevo Laredo rail this year and to build more than twice as many railroads as the current President Andrés Manuel López Obrador administration.
“We have made the decision to keep building trains… Now we will go to the north. As you know, we have talked about several projects during the campaign, and we’re consolidating those,” she told reporters on Monday, according to news outlet Infobae.
Sheinbaum’s six-year term will start on October 1.
Her administration’s infrastructure plan will be presented next week, Jesús Esteva, who is set to become infrastructure, communications and transport minister, announced recently. The intention is to get half the cargo and passenger rail projects built by defense ministry Sedena and half by private companies.
“The aim is to build 3,500km of passenger railways,” Sheinbaum was quoted as saying by El Financiero. The current government has built around 1,500km since taking office in 2018.
She also said that her infrastructure plan includes a branch of the interoceanic rail corridor to reach the Olmeca refinery in Tabasco state and the expansion of the Maya train to Puerto Progreso in Yucatán.
The president of construction chamber CMIC, Luis Méndez Jaled, said during a press conference on Tuesday that the government must not rush the tenders.
“We must revise in detail what tenders will be launched. We consider that one of the best strategies is planning… you cannot build a country like this one with so many challenges without proper planning.”
