Mexico's Nuevo León state announces construction of US$40mn dam in Huasteca

Mexico's Nuevo León state announced the construction of a 700mn-peso (US$40.1mn) dam in the Huasteca region to mitigate floods in the Monterrey metropolitan area.

Governor Samuel García (in photo) vowed to have the project built in a year and said it includes a bicycle lane for visitors to the Huasteca region.

The dam wall will be 174m long and 78m tall, and will be 14km from another dam that is already built.

García also said that the works are expected to be carried out by one of the local companies that built the Cuchillo II aqueduct

According to pre-construction studies, that were done in five months, a third dam is needed near Pico del Águila and will be built at a later date, García was quoted as saying by daily La Jornada.

The tender for that project will be published within the next few days, said the state's minister of mobility and urban planning, Hernán Villarreal Rodríguez.
