Mexico’s Yucatán state adances electromobility corridor

The congress of Mexico’s Yucatán state has approved financing for up to 1.7bn pesos (US$86mn) for a 100km electric bus corridor in capital Mérida.

With 23 votes in favor and two against, lawmakers backed governor Mauricio Vila’s IETRAM project to connect Mérida and the Kanasín and Umán municipalities.

The investment will help provide the state’s part of the corridor that will also require the participation of the federal government and private sector, according to the original project announcement

Yucatán will have up to 20 years to pay the loans, congress said in a statement.

On Twitter, Vila celebrated the approval and added that the work will link 137 neighborhoods in and around Mérida.

In a statement released on June 11, the state government said the work involves three routes – Kanasín-Centro, Umán-Centro and Centro-Facultad de Ingeniería UADY. The governor also said the project will use the rights-of-way of unused rails and up to 30 electric units will operate in the corridor from the last quarter of 2023.
