Microsoft granted new environmental permit for Sumaré project in Brazil
Microsoft secured a new environmental permit for its Sumaré datacenter in Brazil’s São Paulo state, as the company advances with the construction of different sites in the Campinas region.
São Paulo’s environmental agency Cetesb granted a first environmental approval for the facility in September 2022.
This month, the site was granted a certification for industrial waste treatment, known as Cadri, BNamericas has learned. The license is valid for five years until August 18, 2029.
The certification was issued on behalf of XR4 Soluções Ambientais, a company specializing in environmental consultancy and management that has been hired by Microsoft for the project.
As previously reported by the company to the agency, the datacenter in Sumaré will be supplied by 21 generators as back-up. Each generator will have a diesel tank, totaling 20 tanks, each with 30m3 capacity and one with 5m3 capacity.
CONSTRUCTION
Microsoft started construction of the Sumaré datacenter, known as Sumaré Leste, in July last year. The project is expected to be completed in early 2028.
The site is being built on Estrada Municipal Valencio Calegari, on a large plot of land adjacent to the administrative center of motorcycle maker Honda.
Nearby is also the headquarters of 3M do Brasil, the Sotreq industrial park and one of the world's largest Caterpillar dealers, among others.
Building works are being carried out by Racional Engenharia, a civil construction company that won this project with Microsoft.
Racional is responsible for erecting all metal structures, the datacenter walls and building the power substation that will supply the site. All these processes are expected to be completed by the end of this year.
Founded over 50 years ago, Racional has other datacenter projects in its portfolio, including Itaú's technology center, the datacenter of the Brazilian B3 stock exchange, Telefônica Vivo, Tivit and Serasa Experian. However, this is Racional's first datacenter for a big cloud company.
In addition to Sumaré, Microsoft is also building datacenters in neighboring Hortolândia.
As reported exclusively by BNamericas, the company is also negotiating land for a major datacenter in Limeira, also in São Paulo state.
