Minas Gerais inks contracts to pave 226km

Brazilian state Minas Gerais' governor Aecio Neves has inked contracts worth 74.6mn reais (currently US$26.5mn) to pave 225km of highways through 2006, the state government reported. The contracts were signed with groups of sugar and alcohol producers, and fall under the first stage of the state's productive sectors transport infrastructure improvement development program. The companies will pay for the works, after which the state will reimburse them by returning a percentage of the ICMS sales tax. The contracts were signed with Usina Coruripe, Usina Volta Grande, Usina Delta and Usina Lajinha. In related news, Neves also launched a state resources and action strategic management program, known as GERAES, which brings together 29 priority projects, including highway safety, logistics and paving works.
