The Minister of Energy and Mines, Rómulo Mucho, participated in the official launch of the Matarani Solar Plant, built by the Yinson Group of Malaysia and located in the Mollendo desert, Islay province, in the Arequipa region, with a power of 97 megawatts, and designed to emit 260 GWh of renewable energy annually.
The event was also attended by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim; Malaysian Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Zafrul bin Tengku Abdul Aziz; and Peru's Minister of Production Sergio Gonzalez, among other authorities and personalities linked to the energy sector.
The head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) said that the implementation of this solar plant constitutes a fundamental step towards advancing on our path towards energy transition and the progressive incorporation of clean energy into our daily lives and economic activities.
“Peru has been chosen by the Yinson Group, one of the world's leading energy companies, to begin operations in Latin America, which confirms our high potential to attract investments in renewable energy,” he said during the event.
Minister Rómulo Mucho also stressed that the 260 gigawatt hours of renewable energy that the Matarani plant will produce annually will contribute greatly to meeting the electrical needs of approximately 62,000 Peruvian homes, boosting the local economy and offering new productive opportunities.
The minister also highlighted that the aforementioned company also has the Majes renewable energy project in Arequipa, which will have a capacity of 130 megawatts and whose first phase is expected to be ready for construction by the end of 2024.
“We are proud to strengthen our ties of friendship with the Malaysian government. We have important projects to advance towards petrochemicals and non-conventional renewable energies, and to position ourselves as an attractive country for investment within the APEC Forum,” he stressed.
In turn, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim highlighted that the Matarani solar plant exemplifies the successful collaboration between our nations and stressed that Peru offers important opportunities to international investors.
“I invite more Malaysian businesses to explore the abundant opportunities in Peru, and vice versa. The rich diversity of experiences, knowledge and cultures that each country presents can significantly enhance the value of our projects, paving the way for a stronger economy and improving the quality of life of our citizens,” he said.
