The Minister of Energy and Mines, Oscar Vera Gargurevich, reiterated that his administration has the objective of consolidating the path to the transition towards non-conventional renewable energies and energy diversification, in order to progressively close the gaps in access to energy for the year 2026.

From Chilca, Vera highlighted the start of commercial operation of the Chilca-BESS system, the largest battery energy storage system in Peru that allows an additional capacity of 50 MW of efficient energy to be allocated to the country, strengthening energy security.

The head of the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM) added that this new work, developed by the company Engie, consolidates Peru's position as a destination for new investments in energy, with a high potential to carry out other electricity generation initiatives from of non-conventional renewable energies.

It should be noted that the Chilca-BESS system has an installed power of 26.5 MW, which makes it the largest in the country, and is located in the facilities of the ChilcaUno Thermoelectric Power Plant to provide the mandatory Primary Frequency Regulation (RPF) service. )* required by the electrical system.

Chilca BESS, whose construction required an investment of US$18.3 million, has 84 lithium-ion battery cabinets, with inverters and electrical transformers using modern technology that allows it to better store and manage energy during times of greatest demand. which will help ensure the continuity of the electrical supply to the user.

The Chilca-BESS System does not increase CO2 emissions and will become the main source of flexibility for electrical systems, replacing coal or diesel generation.

In this way, this work constitutes one of the most flexible and reliable technologies to support the development of renewable energies in Peru, and thereby accelerate the energy transition safely.

Participating in this opening ceremony were the Vice Minister of Electricity, Jaime Luyo; the French ambassador to Peru, Marc Giacomini; the CEO of ENGIE Energía Perú, Mehdi Ben Maalla, as well as officials from BESS and TG3 ChilcaUno.
