The Ministry of Energy and Mines (MINEM), firm in its commitment to promote the widespread use of natural gas in Peru, has been working with the authorities of Puno to facilitate the construction of Satellite LNG Regasification Plants, which will allow the storage of this fuel and its distribution to homes.

The Vice Minister of Hydrocarbons, Iris Cárdenas, together with the mayor of the Provincial Municipality of Chucuito - Juli, Víctor Anchapuri, toured a plot of land of more than 7 thousand square meters, which was evaluated by technical personnel of the Energy Social Inclusion Fund (FISE) in view of its use in a natural gas expansion project.

“Our government policy is to make natural gas more widely available, and we want to bring it to this area of Puno. It is our commitment that the population has access to an energy source that improves their quality of life, contributing to social equity, as it is a less polluting and more economical resource,” said Cárdenas.

He stressed the importance of working in a coordinated manner to ensure the viability of the bidding process in the short term.

Anchapuri Zapata thanked the MINEM for the attention he received, noting that he would formalize the request before the Municipal Council to begin the process of massification of natural gas in Juli, the fourth most populated province in the region with 139 thousand inhabitants.

Gas reserves

At another time, Cárdenas outlined the progress made in increasing natural gas reserves in Peru, for which the Puno region plays an extremely important role, due to its Candamo deposit, located in the Madre de Dios basin, where there are said to be 10.3 trillion cubic feet (TCF) of gas.

In this regard, he said that Perupetro would sign a Technical Evaluation Agreement with one of the top-level companies to see how it can be developed and how much potential can be found in said natural reserve.

It is worth mentioning that the municipal mayor of the province of Puno, Javier Ponce, handed over a plot of land, located in the town of Jayllihuaya, for the construction of a future Satellite Plant for Regasification of Liquefied Natural Gas – LNG, a project that will serve 1,000 homes in a first stage.
