Miners seen set to pay more taxes

Bnamericas
Large foreign mining companies operating in Chile could pay US$2.9bn in taxes over the next seven years, the head of the country's state-run copper commission, Patricio Cartagena, told a congressional inquiry. The estimate compares to US$1.84bn between 1991 and 2002. The commission is probing the tax situation of foreign mining companies, amid calls in some quarters for the introduction of royalties on mineral extraction.
