Ministry accuses concessionaire of distorting accident

Bnamericas
Chile's public works ministry has accused the Rutas del Pacifico highway concessionaire of giving a misleading account of an accident that occurred in the Zapata tunnel between capital Santiago and coastal city Valparaiso on Saturday. After viewing video evidence, ministerial concessions coordinator Camilo Rojas said Rutas del Pacifico's version had downplayed the concessionaire's liability in the accident, in which a piece of the tunnel's roof apparently dislodged and caused a multi-car pileup. Rutas del Pacifico spokesperson Cristian Sandoval was quoted as saying the highway's safety systems were operating normally at the time of the incident and that the concessionaire would submit its technical report of the events to the ministry on Monday. Rutas del Pacifico - made up of Spain's ACS and Sacyr - won a 25-year concession in 1998 to upgrade and operate the Route 68 highway between Santiago and the Region V coast with a US$377mn bid.
