Ministry to invest US$8.4mn in Huancavelica through 2006

Peru's energy and mines ministry will invest 26.8mn soles (US$8.4mn) in Huancavelica department over the next two years to provide electricity to 45,000 inhabitants in rural areas, energy and mines minister Glodomiro Sánchez said in a statement. In Huancavelica, the percentage of the population with electricity jumped from 50% to nearly 67% from 2001-2004, benefiting some 134,000 residents, the statement said. The ministry hopes to increase that percentage to 71% by end-2006. Sánchez added that in Huancavelica the ministry has invested 18mn soles over the last four years, and will invest 2.5mn more this year to refurbish power lines. From 2001-2004, Peru invested a total 47mn soles to build up the power infrastructure in rural areas, including building transmission lines and distribution networks.
