
Mobile internet data usage increases 20% in Mexico during 2Q20

The Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) makes available to the public various indicators of the economic outlook of the telecommunications and radio broadcasting (TyR) sectors in Mexico, as well as disaggregated information on mobile telecommunications services, updated to the second quarter of 2020 , which can be consulted in the Telecommunications Information Bank (BIT).
Mobile internet access service
- Mobile internet service lines reached 96.4 million in June 2020, which implies an increase of 4 million more lines than those registered in the same month of 2019.
- In the second quarter of 2020, the average data flow per mobile internet service line was 4.3 GB, an increase of 20% compared to the same month of 2019.
- At the national level, 76 lines per 100 inhabitants were reported in the mobile internet service in June 2020. By December 2019, this value was 77 lines per 100 inhabitants.
Mobile phone service
- As of June 2020, just over 119 million lines of mobile telephone service were registered, this represents a decrease of 2.9 million lines compared to December 2019.
- At this same period, the lines per 100 inhabitants are 93 nationwide, while in December 2019 they were 96.
- Accumulated mobile phone minute traffic in the second quarter decreased 1.5% compared to the same period in 2019.
T&B economic overview
- In the second quarter of 2020, the GDP of the T&B sectors was 515 billion pesos, which represented 3.4% of the National GDP, while in June 2019 this value represented 2.5%.
- As of June 2020, the GDP of telecommunications and broadcasting services grew 13.2% annually, while the national GDP decreased 18.7 percent
- From June 2013 to June 2020, the Communications Price Index (IPCOM) fell 27.5%; and the National Consumer Price Index (INPC) had an increase of 30.8% in the same period.
- As of June 2020, the accumulated Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the T&B sectors was 620 million dollars, which represents 3.4% of the total FDI captured in Mexico.
- With figures as of March 2020, the number of people employed in the telecommunications and broadcasting sectors had an annual decrease of 4.8%, going from 269,457 in March 2019 to 256,406 in March 2020.
