Modernization works on Belo Horizonte subway kick off

Modernization works on line No. 1 of the Belo Horizonte subway in Brazil’s Minas Gerais state have kicked off.

Works started at the Eldorado and Vilarinho stations in the state capital, the Minas Gerais government said in a press release.

They include the implementation of new electric, hydraulic, drainage and lighting systems, renovation of roofs, ticket offices and operational areas, as well as painting works.

The government said that 10 of the subway's 19 stations will be modernized by 2025.

The works are part of a 30-year concession contract with total investments worth 3.7bn reais (US$755mn).

The contract belongs to Brazilian urban and interurban bus operator Comporte Participações.

The company, which is controlled by the Constantino family who founded local airline Gol, won the privatization auction for Minas Gerais state rail firm CBTU in December last year.

The privatization of CBTU paved the way for the expansion of the Belo Horizonte subway through the concession, which also includes operation and maintenance.
