PRESS RELEASE from the Ministry of Public Works of Chile
November 5, 2024
Santiago, November 5, 2024.- This Monday, the decree awarding the authorization, operation and maintenance of the concession of the new Talca Penitentiary Establishment was published in the Official Gazette. In this way, the San José Construction Company will be in charge of said functions in this facility, which involves an investment of UF 1,400,000 (approximately MM USD 63).
The work, commissioned by the Ministry of Justice, which is located in the Maule Region, was designed and built by the Architecture Department of the Ministry of Public Works, with provisional acceptance in 2023.
The Minister of Public Works, Jessica López, stated that “at the MOP we took the mandate of President Boric to continue moving forward with the prison infrastructure plan, which is why we awarded the concession for the operation of the La Laguna Prison. In this way, the prison facility that was built will begin to receive inmates in a first stage during the last months of this year or, at the latest, at the beginning of 2025. The prison will be fully operational in 2026, with a capacity for more than 2,300 inmates in 63,500 m2.”
Along these lines, the prison could begin partial operations this year, which would allow the maximum admission of approximately 400 people.
The building has a total area of approximately 63,570 m2 and 14 three-story detention modules. This new concession includes the fitting out of all areas intended for the provision of services, which includes the provision of standard and security equipment, the execution of improvements in security facilities, among other works.
The project also includes the maintenance and upkeep of the infrastructure and the provision of penitentiary services, such as support for social reintegration, health care and food, among others.
