Starting this month, Santiago Airport began enabling flights in the last boarding building of the International Terminal (T2), T2-F. It is a 22 thousand m2 facility that will have 10 boarding gates, six commercial premises, children's games and services.
The space, which pays tribute to Patagonia, began to be used for the disembarkation of flights, as part of the action plan, with mitigation measures for a $32 billion works program that will be implemented during the year by the Airports Directorate of the Ministry of Public Works to improve the conditions of the aprons and taxiways for aircraft.
The Minister of Public Works, Jessica López, pointed out that the Santiago Airport is the main entry and exit door to our country “and with this work we are reinforcing the infrastructure of the terminal, which includes an investment of 35 million dollars. There are 22,000 square meters that are added to the infrastructure that is already operating. Consider, of course, what is necessary for flights and also commerce, food and children's games. In addition, our Airports Directorate is carrying out a set of works related to the circulation of aircraft, and the expansion and reinforcement of taxiways."
He added that the work gives continuity to the works, which will continue their development until 2025. "They will allow us to have a completely remodeled terminal with new areas to accommodate up to a maximum of 20 million passengers in the medium term."
Among the works, the road surfaces of the speaker platform will be replaced, three boarding bridges in the T2-C building will be left inoperative between April and July, and another three in the T2-E building, between July and September.
The General Manager of Nuevo Pudahuel , Nicolas Claude , explained that these operations will be attended to in the T2-F building. “We have the capacity to enable new disembarkation spaces in the first stage and boarding spaces later, when the demand for winter holidays or National Holidays makes it necessary.”
He added that the T2-F building follows the principles of the entire Terminal 2 infrastructure: it has a design that allows various areas to be illuminated with natural light, which generates subsequent energy savings.
The works plan will also include improvements carried out by the DGAC in the network of fuel pumps in front of the National Terminal.
“The work consists of the construction of two new taxiways associated with the Right Runway or 17R, to make the movement of aircraft on the right runway more efficient. Replacement of some concrete pavements, and improvement of the service streets and the fuel hydrant network” concluded Juan Luis Rodríguez, Head of the Arturo Merino Benítez-DGAC Airport.
In addition to the opening of the T2-F building, the MOP and Nuevo Pudahuel are working on the opening of the T1-A building, which will add eight new boarding gates to the National Terminal. The objective is for it to be operational before the National Holidays, to face the increase in passengers that is expected due to the five days of festivity that will occur in this year's celebrations.
