MOP will tender concession portfolio for US$17.6bn between 2024 and 2028
Statement from the Ministry of Public Works of Chile
From highways to cable cars, trams, a train and a desalination plant, consider the portfolio of concessions that was launched this Wednesday by the Minister of Public Works , Jessica López, accompanied by the General Director of Concessions , Juan Manuel Sánchez.
In the activity, the authority highlighted the contribution in terms of investment that reaches 12.6 billion dollars in a total of 24 projects distributed in 2024-2025.
“Today we launch the portfolio of projects that we hope to develop in the five-year period 2024-2028 through the Concessions Directorate. And we also present, specifically, the portfolio of projects that the ministry is going to develop during the remainder of President Boric's Government. We have 24 projects planned to call for bidding between now and the end of the Government, for a figure of 17,000 million dollars. A very important figure, which is made available to national and foreign companies so that these projects of diverse scope can be studied. For example, our routes in Chile, Route 5, transversal routes, new highways in the cities, peripheral routes, public transport corridors, also trams, also cable cars, and water infrastructure,” said Minister López.
In this regard, the president of the Association of Public Infrastructure Works Concessionaires (Copsa), Leonardo Daneri, along with thanking the event, highlighted that: "Figures have been released that are historic in the entire history of the Concessions Law of Public Works. These are all historical figures, both in number of works, number of projects, projects under construction and in bidding.”
“In this government, bricks that were designed and put out to tender in previous governments are being laid. He is also ensuring that the number of bricks laid by the next team is much greater. That is to say, the section of the baton that is corresponding to this team, which is made up of the minister and the director of Concessions, has run faster than all the previous ones to deliver the baton to the next one," added the president of COPSA .
It is estimated that the works will imply the estimated generation of 32 thousand jobs in the construction stage, as well as a contribution of 4% to the GDP.
For his part, the general director of Concessions, Juan Manuel Sánchez, highlighted that "we are here in the covered stadium of O'Higgins Park, which is the contract for concessions that we administer, as a sign that this public-private alliance achieves successes like this venue. Few people know that this project is a public infrastructure that is currently managed by a concessionaire company. And that is part of the work we carry out with all the projects, both with roads and also projects that are beginning to nourish our portfolio to address the needs of Chilean society.”
Among the calls for tender, the Tsunami Warning System projects, Route 5 Iquique-Antofagasta and Caldera-Antofagasta sections, as well as the Concepción electrocorridor network on routes 150 and 160, the Alto Hospicio-Iquique cable car, the desalination plant Coquimbo and the Talca and Copiapó prisons.
To this must be added the 10 projects that are currently in the bidding process, that is, waiting to receive offers that represent an investment of 6,306 million dollars.
In the presentation made by the Director of Concessions, the progress of the Good Neighbor program was also highlighted, which in 2023 considered 77 initiatives for an investment of 81 million dollars and for 2024 the development of 163 initiatives with an investment of 152 million dollars is planned.
The authority also highlighted that the current concession contracts total 78, distributed in 49 in operation, 19 in construction and 10 in construction and simultaneous operation, providing a total investment of 25,849 million dollars.
