More than 3,200 electrified vehicles have been sold so far in 2023

This Automotive Association of Peru release was published using machine translation.

At the end of the third quarter of 2023, 3,211 units of electrified vehicles (hybrid and electric) were sold, a figure greater by 66% (1,274 units) compared to the same period in 2022 and by 20% (531 units) than everything sold in the 2022. “The positive performance of this segment of the automotive market responds to the population's greater interest and awareness in caring for the environment, and the increase in supply,” said Alberto Morisaki, manager of Economic Studies and Statistics of the Automotive Association. of Peru (AAP), after noting that as of September 2023, more than 50 brands and around 130 models of electrified vehicles are available to Peruvians.

Now when analyzing the figures by type of technology, he said, it stands out that in recent years pure electric vehicles or BEV (Battery Electric Vehicle) and plug-in hybrids or PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) They are gaining share in this segment of the market. Thus, between January and September 2023, 194 pure electric vehicles and 195 plug-in hybrid vehicles were marketed, going from representing 2.5% and 4.2% of the total electrified vehicles in the same period of 2021; in each case, at 6% and 6.1% in the first nine months of this year; respectively. On the other hand, conventional hybrid vehicles or HEV (Hybrid Electric Vehicle) continue to be the most requested, with 2,822 units sold in the analysis period; a figure that represents 87.9% participation, but lower than the 93.3% registered in 2021. “It is important to highlight that in September 2023, 35 units of pure electric vehicles were sold, the highest monthly figure recorded to date,” he noted. .

Morisaki pointed out that, despite the strong increase in the sale of electrified vehicles in Peru, their penetration level remains low, 2%. That is, he said, for every 100 new light and heavy vehicles marketed, only 2 are electrified. "A very different situation from that shown by other countries in the region, such as Colombia, where in the first nine months of the year almost 7 times (22,135 units) the quantity sold in Peru was sold, which meant a penetration of the 17% of vehicle sales,” he commented, after indicating that the big difference between both countries is the public policy they apply. In Colombia, he explained, the State promotes the entry and sale of more electrified vehicles with clear and direct incentives, the application of which generates benefits for the environment and therefore the quality of life for its citizens and an improvement for the country. "In Peru, the State should be in that same direction; decisions that make these vehicles available to all Peruvians are extremely necessary and urgent if we want to democratize this technology in our country," he concluded.
