Lima, October 14, 2024 – In the framework of the International Day of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), Movistar reaffirms its commitment to the circular economy and the responsible management of this type of waste by promoting sustainable practices to protect the environment. Through its “Message to the Planet” initiative, which seeks responsible management of electronic waste, it has managed to recycle and reuse a total of 858 tons of WEEE in the last year.
Of the total managed, 580 tons of equipment were recycled and 278 tons reconditioned and reused, applying its circular economy strategy that ensures that no waste is sent to final disposal. Among the equipment that is part of WEEE management are cell phones, modems, routers, decoders, landlines as well as various types of unused accessories.
“At Movistar, we not only recycle electronic waste, but we also recondition equipment for reuse, contributing to caring for the environment and promoting a recycling culture in society. All of this is part of our global commitment to become a Zero Waste company by 2030,” said Juan Zegarra, Manager of Public Affairs and Communications at Telefónica del Perú.
As part of the activities for the International WEEE Day, Movistar will participate in initiatives to raise public awareness about the importance of recycling this waste. One of these will be the environmental fair organized by the Ministry of the Environment on October 14, a commemorative event in which the company will discuss its work in WEEE management and the importance of promoting a recycling culture in the community.
In addition, on October 24, students will participate in the “Reciclatrueque” at the Universidad Tecnológica del Perú, in collaboration with the “Recicla Consciente” campaign promoted by Supermercados Peruanos, the largest recycling movement in the country. During this event, students will be able to bring their electronic waste and receive ecological prizes in exchange, encouraging active participation in recycling.
Movistar promotes the circular economy in B2B and B2C
In addition to properly managing WEEE, Movistar offers its customers products and services that care for the environment.
For its business clients, it has an offer of Eco Smart services, a seal that shows the environmental benefits that our B2B solutions can generate. To date, 46% of the company's B2B products and services, which have been verified by AENOR, have this seal. In addition, one of the characteristics of the Eco Smart seal is that it contributes to the circular economy of its clients.
It also offers residential customers devices with the Eco Rating seal, which measures the recyclability of devices, among other key environmental factors. 33% of the devices available for B2C customers in Movistar's virtual catalogue have this seal.
With these actions, Movistar continues to lead the responsible management of electronic waste, promoting a circular economy that benefits its customers and the environment. Through its sustainable initiatives, it reinforces its commitment to protecting the planet, aligning itself with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and contributing to building a greener future through digitalization.
