MPC Energy sees new LatAm projects ready starting end-2025

Latin America and Caribbean-focused MPC Energy Solutions has six active projects for a combined 300MW in its development backlog, according to CFO Stefan Meichsner.

“We’re aiming for late 2025, early 2026 to get new projects ready to build,” the executive said during the Amsterdam-based company’s second quarter and first half results call.

He added that the projects are in El Salvador, Guatemala, Panama and the Dominican Republic, and are at different stages, with work underway to secure power purchase agreements.

Additional details were not disclosed.

MPC currently has four solar plants in operation in the region: Planeta Rica (27MW) and Los Girasoles (12MW) in Colombia, Santa Rosa (21MW) in El Salvador, and Los Santos I (16MW) in Mexico, as well as the 3MW Noel combined heat-and-power plant in Puerto Rico.

A fifth plant, the 65MW San Patricio solar park in Guatemala is due online in the middle of next year. MPC is searching for a co-investor for this project and plans to close a deal by year-end.

When asked about the potential for selling stakes in the four operational plants, the CFO said, “we’re open to discuss, but we’re not actively trying to farm these down.”

In 1H24, MPC’s output rose 46% year-on-year to 59.1GWh and revenue grew 53% to US$6.1mn.
