Natgas forecast to supply a third of Dominican Rep's power
The participation of natural gas-fired electricity generation in the Dominican Republic in the coming years is expected to range between 33% and 36%.
The outlook is part of power grid coordinator OC’s just released 2023-26 operating report.
The fuel is seen as an essential contributor to baseload power to help cover demand amid an increasing push to further incorporate non-conventional renewable energies.
In recent weeks, groundbreaking was held for two gas-fired projects: the 840MW Manzanillo complex and the 414 MW Manzanillo Power Land plant.
The government also has a call underway to supply up to 900MW from existing thermoelectric capacity.
Over the four-year period, natural gas would be followed by coal (23.9-29.8%), solar (13-21%), wind (7.2-7.6%), hydro (5.5-5.6%), fuel oil (7.1-8.7%) and biomass (0.9%).
Regarding demand, the report, available here, forecasts that annual power use will grow around 3%.
