Natural gas projected to account for half of DomRep power generation

Natural gas-fired power plants are forecast to account for around half of electricity production in the Dominican Republic in 2025-29.

So reads a new study from grid coordinator OC which projects that the fuel’s participation will range between 47% and 54% in the five-year period.

A previous OC outlook estimates that the contribution of natural gas will reach 40% in 2024.

In 2020, natural gas was the second highest electricity supplier after coal, according to information from the grid coordinator.

The energy and mines ministry recently launched an international public tender for the construction of two natural gas plants for a combined 800MW and a gas terminal that will operate in Manzanillo.

In addition, the latest OC study, available here, highlights the expected contribution in 2025-29 from coal (26-31%), hydro (5-8%), solar (6-7%), wind (5-7%), biomass (1%), LPG (1%) and oil (0-1%).
