Nearly 500MW under review in Jamaica renewable energy call
Twelve bids for a combined 482MW were submitted in the Jamaican government’s call to supply 100MW from renewable energies.
Energy minister Daryl Vaz provided the update during a presentation to lawmakers where he said that the winners will be announced in the coming months.
Vaz did not disclose the names of the participants and the Generation Procurement Entity did not immediately respond to a request for information.
BNamericas previously reported that over 40 companies had submitted expressions of interest in the process and that MPC Energy Solutions was looking to participate with its 65MW Acacia solar project.
The government plans to launch a second renewable energy call for 168MW this year.
In his speech to parliament, the minister also announced that the second integrated resource plan, which will outline the roadmap to achieve 50% generation from renewables by 2030, will be submitted to the cabinet for approval.
Other power sector action areas highlighted by Vaz include a campaign to tackle non-technical losses which will cost US$74.5mn, with projected benefits of US$400mn over 10 years, rural electrification, and policies related to electromobility, energy efficiency, waste to energy, and small modular nuclear reactors.
