Newmont rejects accusations of international mining front

Denver-based mining company Newmont rejected accusations made by the international mining front (FIM) that it dismissed more than 100 union members from its operations in Mexico, Peru and Argentina for demanding profit-sharing payments.

“These statements are completely untrue. It is false and defamatory that the company has made 100 layoffs in retaliation against workers for demanding payment of the [worker profit-sharing] PTU,” the world's leading gold producer stated when contacted by BNamericas.

Napoleón Gómez Urrutia, leader of the national union of mining, metallurgical, steel and related workers of Mexico and local representative of FIM, told press on Tuesday that the company has carried out reprisals against Mexican employees because of a strike that lasted more than four months last year at the Peñasquito gold and silver mine in Zacatecas state.

“Newmont Peñasquito has complied at all times with the current collective bargaining agreement, the agreements signed with its union and the applicable legislation,” Newmont added.

The company also underscored that “it will continue to act in accordance with the law and will maintain a firm stance on integrity and transparency, with the commitment to protect a sustainable future for all that are part of Peñasquito.”

FIM was created in January by mining unions from Mexico, Canada, Peru and Argentina to establish collaboration and defend the rights of employees in those countries against Newmont and other transnational mining companies.
