Nexa Resources suspends operations at Peruvian mine due to protests

Brazilian polymetallic miner Nexa Resources temporarily suspended the main operations of its Peruvian Atacocha unit because the Joraoniyoc community is blocking access to the San Gerardo zinc deposit in Pasco region.
“Nexa is complying with all existing agreements, carrying out active dialogue with the community and authorities for a peaceful resolution of this situation,” according to a company statement.
Atacocha produces 200t of zinc per week, the company said.
In 2022, Nexa suspended the San Gerardo pit three times due to complaints. Operations were also halted in mid-2023.
According to Nexa's latest presentation, Atacocha produced 8,000t of zinc in 2023, below guidance of 9,000-11,000t because illegal protests in H1 forced a suspension. Lead production was in line with guidance and reached 11,000t, while silver output was 1.4Moz, exceeding guidance of 1.0-1.2Moz.
Despite the current complications, Nexa projects Atacocha's zinc production to grow 7% this year to 8,560t, adding 1,400t by 2025. Lead output will grow 5% to 11,550t and 20% next year, when higher ore grades will be mined.
