Nicaragua Canal making progress, says commission

Studies continue to progress as planned for the project to construct an inter-oceanic canal in Nicaragua, said Telémaco Talavera, head of the country's commission overseeing the mega-project.

Structural alignment studies are advanced at Brito, the worksite where the first major works will begin to construct the Pacific ocean port entrance to the canal, in addition to advances in archaeological studies in the area, local news outlet Prensa Latina reported Talavera as saying.

Pre-construction archaeological works have uncovered over 3,000 artifacts, project concessionaire HKND has reported.

The complementary studies will determine the canal's final route and optimize the design parameters set forth in the environmental impact study.

In late-2015, HKND brought on board marine infrastructure and engineering consultancy BMT Asia Pacific, with the UK-based BMT Group, to carry out canal and port operations plans, which will be used to determine the final route for the 276km-canal.

The studies are expected to be submitted in March, HKND said.
