Nicaragua issues call to advance geothermal project

Nicaragua’s energy and mines ministry launched bidding for the Cosiguina geothermal project.

The 434-day contract entails drilling deep wells in the Cosiguina volcano area and falls under an IDB-financed geothermal exploration and transmission improvement program for the country.

Offers are due by August 19, according to the procurement notice, available in the Documents box in the top right corner.

The project is in the Cosigüina peninsula in the municipality of El Viejo, Chinandega department, some 210km northwest of capital Managua. Studies have determined a reservoir temperature of 190-250°C.

The ministry recently held an informative meeting with companies to present the drill plan.

Geothermal power currently accounts for around 10% of Nicaragua’s installed capacity and the government's generation expansion roadmap envisions adding 85MW from this renewable energy source.

Potential projects include Casita-San Cristóbal and Mombacho.
