Nicaragua moves forward with major bridge project

The project to construct a 255m bridge over Nicaragua’s Wawa River is moving forward and has reached 87.5% progress, local TV channels reported.

There are now 32m left to build before the bridge is finished, Viva Nicaragua Canal 13 reported Carlos Suárez, a project manager from construction firm Constructora Meco, as saying.

The project is headed by the transport and infrastructure ministry (MTI) and it will become Nicaragua’s third longest bridge.

It will benefit more than 140,000 people in six communities and have a major transportation impact in the country’s North Caribbean region, Canal 4 reported.

The two sections of the 11.7m-wide bridge that are being built will be united in September, Suárez told Canal 13, adding that refurbishment works will be ready by November.

Suárez also said that 220 people are working on the site, of which 80 are natives from surrounding communities.
