Nicaragua opens 2nd stage of Bluefields-Nueva Guinea link

Nicaragua's transport and infrastructure minister Óscar Mojica opened Thursday the second stretch of a road link between the municipalities of Bluefields and Nueva Guinea in the south Caribbean autonomous region, state media reported.

The US$39.5mn, 23km section was built with hydraulic concrete and connects the localities of Comunidad Taleno and Villa Nueva to the benefit of 165,000 area residents.

Financing came from an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) loan and the national government.

Works on the two-lane road section began in April 2016 and included building a 40m bridge over the Caño Silva ravine, and the completion of 60 sewage and drainage works.

The road is expected to boost trade, fishing, agriculture, and tourism.

While the first stretch covering 26.5km between Bluefields and San Francisco was completed in December, the third section, which will end at the Naciones Unidas locality of Nueva Guinea municipality, is expected to be opened in April.

The highway forms part of a corridor that will link the country's Caribbean and Pacific coasts.
