Nicaragua opens north Caribbean road

Transport and infrastructure minister Óscar Mojica opened Tuesday the second phase of a road linking Río Blanco, in Matagalpa department, to Mulukukú and Siuna, both localities in Nicaragua's north Caribbean autonomous region.

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei) provided the required US$22.4mn investment, official media reported.

Bolivia's Grupo Santa Fe executed the works, which consisted of paving the two-lane highway with hydraulic concrete and included complementary infrastructure like two new bridges, bus stops, and 92 drainage works.

This second phase runs between the road's station 280+213 and station 301+833, as the third and last phase will be completed in June.

Other projects

Minister Mojica told local broadcaster TN8 that more is to come. Works for the Siuna-Rosita and the Rosita-Sasa highway will start soon.

A tender will be launched for building a road linking Rosita and Bonanza for which works are expected to start by the end of the year, after national assembly approval.
