Nicaragua set to become Central America’s newest LNG player
New Fortress Energy’s (NFE) Nicaragua LNG-to-power project is 90% complete and due to enter service next quarter.
Company chair and CEO Wes Edens provided the update for the Puerto Sandino project during NFE’s second quarter earnings call.
In Central America, the country will join El Salvador and Panama, which already have such facilities.
Edens said the 300MW power plant is complete and ready for operation, and that the jetty (pictured below) where the floating storage unit vessel will moor is 95% complete.
Annual throughput is pegged at 5Mt/y.
Meanwhile, construction of the five-mile pipeline, which will connect the plant and jetty, is underway and expected to be completed next month.
“We feel like this is not just a Nicaragua terminal, but actually a Central American terminal. We think there’s a significant amount of activity that will come as a result of that,” added Edens, who expects the plant will export power to neighboring countries.
New York-based NFE has a 25-year power purchase agreement in place with distributors Distribuidora de Electricidad del Norte and Distribuidora de Electricidad del Sur.
