Nicaraguan electric rail link in prefeasibility stage – CCECC

The plan to build a high-speed electric rail link in Nicaragua is still in the prefeasibility stage but moving forward, officials from China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) told news outlet TN8. 

The line to be built by the Chinese giant is due to connect the municipalities of Managua, Masaya and Granada. 

Last October, Nicaragua’s vice president Rosario Murillo said the country had signed an MOU with CCECC to carry out feasibility studies, and design and construct the project, but no more updates were provided after that. 

“In Nicaragua we signed a memorandum with [transport and infrastructure] minister [Óscar] Mojica for the rail project that will connect Managua, Masaya and Granada… the project is in a process that goes from prefeasibility to feasibility and from there we will be able to offer technical support related to the social impact to the Nicaraguan government,” said CCECC vice president Guan Jiaxin, according to TN8.

“With these documents the economic feasibility can be estimated and we also have to consider the number of passengers,” he added.

Guan Jiaxin said the company also signed a contract to refurbish and expand the potable water systems, sewers and wastewater treatment services in Matagalpa municipality.
