Nicaragua’s Nuevo Amanecer hospital half built

Nicaragua is slowly moving forward with the construction of the US$106mn Nuevo Amanecer regional hospital that is meant to open this year. 

Local media report that the works are 50% complete, after citing a figure of 44% in November and 43% in June last year.

The construction site, in Bilwi municipality, is 18,415m2. Works are being carried out by Makiber. 

The complex will have eight buildings with 207 beds and six operating theaters. It will also have 12 specialized departments and the capacity to offer 80,000 emergency consultations and 103,000 general ones per year, as well as 5,300 operations.

The Central American Bank for Economic Integration (Cabei) – whose representatives toured the construction site in June – is providing US$53mn and the Nicaraguan government the rest. 

Initially, the Netherlands promised funds but withdrew from the project, leading Nicaragua to cut diplomatic ties and declare the ambassador persona non grata. 

The hospital is meant to serve over 515,000 residents in the Puerto Cabezas municipalities and give indigenous communities access to health services.
