São Paulo, October 18, 2024 - ODATA, a company of Aligned Data Centers, a leading provider of data centers in Latin America, and Casa dos Ventos, a reference in the renewable energy market and a protagonist in Brazil's energy transition, announce a long-term contract for the supply of renewable energy through ODATA's participation in the Babilônia Sul Wind Complex (360 MW), located in Várzea Nova, Bahia.
The partnership is part of a strategy for sustainable growth for ODATA, which continues to rapidly expand its data center infrastructure in Latin America. The company has five data centers in Brazil, four in Mexico, two in Chile and one in Colombia, including both operational and under construction units, in addition to other campuses under development to meet the strong demand in the region for hyperscale DCs.
For Ricardo Alário, CEO of ODATA, the country has great potential for clean and renewable energy that should boost Brazil’s position as an important global data center hub. “We were the first hyperscale data center provider to have 100% of the energy consumption of our campuses in Brazil come from renewable generation plants in which we have an equity stake. This partnership with Casa dos Ventos further consolidates our commitment to sustainability and the use of renewable energy in our operations,” says Alário.
“Brazil is very well positioned to meet the expansion of the data center industry. We have an abundant supply of renewable energy at globally competitive prices, in addition to a clean matrix and the ability to quickly connect loads to new data centers, which other geographies do not have,” says the CEO of Casa dos Ventos, Lucas Araripe.
Energy reliability is essential for data centers, as it ensures the resilience of their infrastructure. Because they operate continuously, 24 hours a day, data center providers need continuous, renewable energy to meet sustainability goals. “Casa dos Ventos has customized business models to meet the electricity consumption of data centers, using energy from our portfolio of renewable assets and structured products,” explains Araripe.
“In a time of rising artificial intelligence, when the demand for energy to enable this innovation is greater, having large volumes of clean energy generation is propelling the country as a major hub for the development of data centers specialized in receiving AI and its applications,” adds Alário.
With 80 wind turbines and a total capacity of 360 MW, the Babilônia Sul Wind Complex received an investment of approximately R$1.8 billion and supplies energy to important industries, helping to avoid the emission of approximately 720 thousand tons of CO2 annually, taking into account the average global emissions of the electricity sector (IRENA), the equivalent of planting approximately 4 million trees. The supply of wind energy from the complex to ODATA is expected to begin after completion and fulfillment of certain usual precedent conditions.
