ODATA, a provider of datacenter infrastructure for Latin America, obtains the ISO 14001 certification, corresponding to the guidelines of the Environmental Management System (EMS). The Brazilian company expands its collection of seals related to the data center service, which already has ISO 9001, ISO/IEC 20000-1 and ISO/IEC 27001 certifications.

“With this new recognition, our team is constantly evaluated against international standards, which attest that the organization has broad environmental responsibility and that it strictly follows the relevant standards”, says Carlos Salata, Quality Manager at ODATA.

The new certification, under the seal of TÜV Rheinland Brasil, a subsidiary of the recognized German management systems certification company, considers the data centers SP02, in Hortolândia (SP), and BG01, in Bogotá, Colombia, as well as the administrative offices in Sao Paulo and Bogota. The seal is linked to the colocation service, consisting of solution projects, physical infrastructure management, capacity management, asset management, network management, provisioning and supply of communications for the data center.

In general, ISO 14001 has a set of international standards that indicate the requirements for the implementation of an effective environmental management system. Its main objective is to ensure that certified organizations are qualified for the continuous development of sustainable actions and techniques in their businesses, making it possible to mitigate potential adverse environmental conditions in the organization's facilities and promote an increase in the ecological performance of its operations.

“During the audit process, ODATA confirmed the implementation and operation of an environmental management system in compliance with the ISO 14001 guidelines, demonstrating that its technical, economic and commercial interests are focused on preventing environmental pollution and reducing possible impacts caused by its activities”, explains Mayara Zunckeller Paulino, Operations Manager at TÜV Rheinland.

“The importance of this certification for the technology sector is undeniable. The implementation of ISO 14001 prepares us for policies and performance indicators (KPIs) against the Good Practices of the Environmental Management System, and helps us in the search for Zero Waste certification for operational controls in data centers”, points out Salata.

Since 2020, ODATA has answered the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) questionnaire regarding governance, risks, opportunities, and even engagement and biodiversity. This is a questionnaire formulated by investors, aiming at transparency in the disclosure of information on climate change strategies.

In addition, the company recently joined the iMasons Climate Agreement (ICA) – the initiative of the group made up of different digital infrastructure companies that jointly seek to curb environmental impacts and climate change by reducing carbon in materials , products and digital infrastructure energy. The initiative aims to bring together companies responsible for developing new technologies for digital transformation and creating a more connected world for the world's population.

In line with the most recent points established by climate science, ODATA has also committed to reducing its scope 1 and 2 emissions by 23% by 2030. The goal was defined by the company when it joined the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi), a global collaboration that defines and promotes practices for companies to adopt science-based targets for reducing their greenhouse gas emissions.

With plans to expand engagement in line with the ESG agenda, ODATA plans to expand the scope of ISO 14001 to its other units – including the SP01 data center, in Santana de Parnaíba (SP), and the ST01 data center in Santiago, Chile . “ODATA has a sustainability strategy that is closely integrated with its business guidelines. The next step now is to start the projects related to the ISO 45001 and ISO 22301 certifications”, concludes Salata.
