Odata opens US$50mn datacenter in Rio de Janeiro

Brazilian datacenter firm Odata, which is controlled by US group Aligned Data Centers, activated the first site at its Rio de Janeiro datacenter campus.

With US$50mn in investments, the RJ01 facility is located in São João do Meriti, in Rio’s metropolitan region, the company said in a release.

The datacenter went live with 2MW in its first phase, out of 24MW total projected IT capacity. The initial capacity was leased to a hyperscale customer, who is already operating the site, a company's spokesperson told BNamericas.

In addition to the inauguration of the Rio site, Odata said it successfully concluded the commissioning of its SP02 datacenter, located in São Paulo state’s Hortolândia municipality, and projected to have 36MW capacity.

Commissioning is the process in which the company conducts compliance tests and validates the equipment and infrastructure to ensure a datacenter availability.

"With this, we can guarantee that the critical system meets all the autonomy and redundancy requirements. We also validate that the system can undergo maintenance whenever necessary, without impacting the critical area," Odata told BNamericas.

The comissioning of SP02 lasted two months, starting on March 4 and ending on May 5.

In the state, Odata now has sites in Hortolândia, Santana de Parnaíba and Barueri.

It also has datacenters that are active or under development in Chile, Mexico and Colombia.

Overall, Odata reports 10 sites active/under development in Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and Chile and 16 total, comprising those active, under development or planned for these countries.

With its recent incorporation by Aligned, the group has 41 campuses in Latin America, the US and Canada. Aligned bought Odata from Brazilian asset manager Pátria Investimentos last December for an estimated 10bn reais.

In a recent interview with BNamericas, Aligned’s CEO Andrew Schaap said the company planned to invest US$1bn in Odata to expand in Brazil, Mexico, Colombia and Chile, as well as enter new markets.

Earlier this month, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund Mubadala invested an undisclosed amount and acquired a minority stake in Aligned.
