Oi deploys 100Gbps OTN in Brazil

Bnamericas

Brazilian telecom operator Oi has activated the first 100Gbps Optical Transport Network (OTN) in the country.

The 30,000km network built by Alcatel-Lucent is designed to bolster capacity and provide redundancy in the case of unexpected blackouts, Oi said in a statement.

Oi has also signed an agreement with Alcatel-Lucent to become the first operator in Latin America to deploy G.fast technology, which provides 1Gbps capacity through existing copper infrastructure.

Oi is aiming to use its network infrastructure to offer services such as telemedicine, distance learning and 4K TV services.

The first G.fast network is due to be deployed in March this year in Rio de Janeiro and then extended to other parts of the country.

Alcatel-Lucent's R&D unit Bell Labs is currently testing XG.fast technology that could enable traffic capacity of 10Gbps over short distances.
