Some opposition-aligned mayors in Mexico’s Nuevo León state threaten to halt construction permitting for metro line No. 6 of Monterrey’s Metrorrey system.
Work started in February under a 25.8bn-peso (US$1.39bn) contract, which includes lines No. 4 and No. 5 and went to a consortium formed by Portugal’s Mota-Engil and Chinese state-owned locomotive manufacturer CRRC.
The contract is part of governor Samuel García’s plan to add 36km across three new lines by 2027.
During a mobility forum on Monday, the mayors of Apodaca, San Nicolas and Guadalupe – which form the opposition group Pacto Nuevo León – said they would “take down” the 17km project if roundtables to discuss technical details are not organized.
The mayors said line No. 6 lacks feasibility studies and suggested expanding existing metro line No. 3 instead.
Municipalities are in charge of granting construction permits. Metro line No. 6 is planned to connect Ginecología hospital in the center and Apodaca in the northeast.
Although opposition has been brewing since last year, the state government has not budged.
Construction of 14km line No. 4 between Santa Catarina and downtown Monterrey started in mid-March and works on 9km line No. 5 between Mederos and downtown are expected to start soon.
