Oracle mulling Brazil datacenter partnerships with telcos, banks

Oracle is negotiating with new partners to host the next datacenters for its cloud services in Brazil, in addition to hyperscale and colocation providers, according to country manager Alexandre Maioral.

The model marks an important shift in the company's strategy for Brazil. As of now, Oracle has relied on datacenter providers, such as Ascenty, to build and host its local data structure.

“Most likely our next region will not be a region with Ascenty, for example. It will be with a partnership with a large market segment,” Maiorial said when asked by BNamericas about the company's expanding data structure.

“We are talking to some operators and several are interested in working like that with us,” he said at the Oracle CloudWorld event in São Paulo.

Maioral added that conversations are ongoing with all operators. In Brazil, Oracle provides cloud services for TIM and Telefônica, for example.

The company is also eyeing other potential partners, such as banks. Oracle intends to complete these negotiations this year.

At present, the group operates two cloud regions in Brazil, in São Paulo and Vinhedo, launched in 2019 and 2021. In both cases, the regions are hosted with datacenter providers.

But Oracle will not necessarily stop hiring datacenter providers for its expansions, Maiorial said.

Similar datacenter partnerships are common elsewhere. In Mexico, América Móvil hosts Oracle’s clouds. Oracle's first local cloud region was developed with Telcel, the mobile arm of América Móvil.

In Colombia, Claro's Triara datacenter is the main hub for the company's cloud services.
