According to projections from the Supervisory Body for Private Investment in Telecommunications (OSIPTEL), it is expected that, by the end of 2028, Peru will have more than five million fixed internet connections, for which favorable measures must continue to be promoted. to the deployment of fiber optic networks and take necessary actions to eliminate existing barriers.
This was announced by the executive president of OSIPTEL, Rafael Muente Schwarz, during his presentation at Fiber Connect LATAM Peru, where he noted that, as of the first quarter of this year, more than 3.6 million fixed internet services were registered in the country, of which, 61.97% correspond to fiber optic connections.
“Peru has experienced an abrupt growth in fiber optic connections to the home, exceeding 2.2 million, and this trend is expected to continue in the coming years, with incoming companies and those from the interior of the country driving competition through the massive use of fiber networks,” he noted.
Muente indicated that, as of the third quarter of 2023, Peru ranked second globally in growth of fiber optics to the home according to figures from Point Topic (a company specialized in global internet access metrics).
He added that Peru has also shown sustained growth in Internet access speed in recent years, achieving third place in the region and surpassing countries such as Colombia or Uruguay, according to Ookla (a global company specialized in testing, data analysis and internet).
Along the same lines, the head of OSIPTEL indicated that currently users are increasingly opting for higher speed fixed internet plans. “76% of fixed internet connections have speeds greater than 100 megabits per second (Mbps), according to figures from the first quarter of this year,” he noted.
While these numbers are encouraging, there are still barriers to greater fiber optic deployment. According to a survey carried out by OSIPTEL to fixed internet service providers, the two main obstacles are the difficulties of accessing existing infrastructure and the procedures before the municipalities, some of which impose arbitrary requirements. Both are aspects that must be addressed for greater deployment of this technology.
Finally, the executive president of OSIPTEL assured that this institution is committed to private investment and promoting competition in the market. “To achieve this, we are on a path of regulatory and normative simplification. We also see the market outlook optimistically and we aim to support its potential in our country,” he said.
