Panama greenlights construction of Río Sereno border complex

Panama approved the start of construction of a border complex in Río Sereno as part of the US$75mn customs logistics integration program (PILA).

This project, on the border with Costa Rica, includes a housing complex and offices for the bilateral coordination committee both countries created.

President Laurentino Cortizo and customs head Tayra Barsallo delivered the construction permits to Construcciones del Este, which will carry out the works.

The PILA program includes refurbishment and construction of the Paso Canoas and Guabito border facilities and is funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).

It is expected to improve efficiency by reducing processing costs and times.

Costa Rica is implementing a US$100mn border integration program, which includes revamping its side of the Río Sereno complex.
