Panama power roundup: Chinese interest, distributor compensation, framework tweak

China is committed to strengthening cooperation and supporting development of Panama’s energy sector.

Beijing’s ambassador Xu Xueyuan made the comment following a meeting with energy secretary Juan Manuel Urriola, who highlighted China’s interest in the areas of electromobility, energy efficiency and renewables.

The officials pledged to hold new meetings to review projects.

Distributor compensation

Public services regulator Asep left without effect a resolution issued in December 2020 that suspended the application of norms related to billing compensation for clients because of non-compliance of service quality standards during the national state of emergency due to COVID-19.

Power distributors have 30 days to submit a program of special investments in their concession areas, according to the new resolution, available in the Documents box in the top-right corner of the screen.

The government lifted the state of emergency in July.

Framework tweak

Asep opened consultation for a proposed modification to the power distribution and commercialization framework.

The change, also available in the Documents box, is related to the evaluation of distributors’ operating expenses.

The watchdog will hold a public hearing on October 4.
