Panama to resume power supply call, renewables included

Panama’s energy department recommended to state power transmission company Etesa that it draft and launch a call to supply capacity and energy to cover the obligations of power distributors.

Offers must be received before December 10 and contracts will run 60 months starting March 1, 2025, according to a department resolution, which includes capacity and energy requirements, and pricing.

The capacity component will be open to any technology available for dispatch or in commercial operation, while hydro, solar, wind and biomass plants in testing when bid rules are published, available for dispatch or commercially, may participate in the energy component.

“With this resolution, the government of Panama ensures a rapid and effective response, protecting users from unexpected rate increases and ensuring the continuity of the electrical service in the next few years,” a department release quoted energy secretary Juan Urriola as saying.

The last supply call was cancelled in July when the new administration said the process did not meet the minimum requirements to guarantee transparency to investors, nor improve prices.

The resolution is available in the Documents box in the top-right corner of the screen.
