Panama's BNP requests funding for 2018 lending blitz

State-owned Banco Nacional de Panamá plans to accelerate its lending operations in 2018.

BNP requested US$2.35bn from the national assembly, making it one of the first entities to present their 2018 budget requests.

The bank's general manager, Rolando de León de Alba, said that 84% of the requested budget would be used for lending to all of the country's economic sectors, according to the assembly's news service.

If approved, BNP would have US$313mn more to lend compared to the 2017 budget, local daily La Estrella de Panamá quoted De León as saying.

The requested budget would allow BNP to diversify its product offering and also to defend its position as the largest lender to the agriculture segment, said De León.
