
Panama's TEU traffic inches up

Panama's container traffic volumes rose to 6.9mn TEUs in 2015, a 1.8% increase over 2014, according to figures from the country's maritime authority AMP.
Panama Ports Company, a subsidiary of Hong-Kong based Hutchison Port Holdings, handled 3.1mn TEUs at its Balboa terminal and 812,783 TEUs at its Cristóbal terminal in 2015, down 4.9% and up 14%, respectively.
Manzanillo International Terminal handled approximated 2mn TEUs in 2015, 4.7% fewer than in 2014. MIT is mixed-capital operator, principally affiliated with the US-based container terminal operator SSA Marine.
Colon Container Terminal, a subsidiary of Taiwan's Evergreen Group, saw 789,663 TEUs last year, up 57%.
Panama International Terminal, a subsidiary of Singapore's PSA International, handled 216,012 TEUs in 2015, down 6.9%.
The Bocas Fruit terminal saw its traffic rise 17.3% to 22,346 TEUs.
In related news, the Panama Canal Authority now expects to open the expansion of the waterway in June, as filling of the repaired locks began in early February.
