Panama's Varela opens Chiriquí waterworks

Panama's President Juan Carlos Varela (pictured, second from right) opened a waterworks project in the Boquete district of Chiriquí province, which required US$22.5mn.

The project included construction of an aqueduct, a sewerage system and a wastewater treatment plant, the government said in a release.

The aqueduct comprises two potable water systems, one to supply the Ladrillos locality and another for Alto Boquete. It also includes three water storage tanks, with capacities of 500,000, 400,000 and 60,000 gallons.

The works will have a useful life of 20 years, benefiting more than 21,000 residents in Los Naranjos, Bajo Boquete, Alto Boquete, Caldera, Jaramillo and Palmira.

The sewerage system and wastewater treatment plant were built in Bajo Boquete.

Varela issued the order to begin construction on the project in 2015. The contract to carry out studies and to design, build, maintain and operate all the components was awarded to the Asociación Accidental Aguas de Boquete consortium, comprising Constructora Urbana (Cusa) and Administradora de Proyectos de Construcción (APROCOSA).
