Paraguay to invest over US$250mn bond proceeds in infra

Paraguay's government will invest US$257mn of the proceeds from its latest bond issue on the international market in infrastructure projects.

The country's finance ministry highlighted that this represents 51.4% of its latest bond issue, carried out on Monday, February 4, which involved a total of US$500mn.

Since 2013, the country has issued US$3.9bn in bonds on international markets, of which nearly US$1.9bn has been used for public works, the ministry said in a release on Tuesday.

The funds to be used for infrastructure from the latest bond issue will help finance ongoing projects such as the second stage of the Costanera Norte highway, the rehabilitation of the Alberdi-Pilar highway, the improvement of the Transchaco route, the wastewater treatment system in Asunción and San Lorenzo and the construction of the Emboscada penitentiary, among other works.

The ministry added that another US$200mn from the same bond issue will be used for debt repayments and the remaining US$43mn will be for capitalization.
